Frequently asked questions

What is the AI Upscale API?

Photoroom's AI Upscale API increases the resolution of an image by 4: a 300 x 400 input becomes 1200 x 1600. You set upscale.mode to ai.fast or ai.slow on the Photoroom edit endpoint.

Is AI Upscale generally available?

It's in preview. AI Upscale is available as a preview feature, so there could be breaking changes, with a 2-week notice period. The AI Upscale docs show its current status.

How much does the AI Upscale API cost?

AI Upscale is available on the Plus API plan and on Enterprise plans. An Image Editing API call costs the same whatever edits it combines ($0.10 on Plus). For Enterprise plans and custom pricing, talk to sales. Details are on the pricing page.

How do I call the AI Upscale API?

Get your API key, then send your image with upscale.mode set to ai.fast or ai.slow. This example uses fast mode:

Should I use fast or slow mode?

In general, slow mode should produce results of a higher quality than fast mode. We recommend that you try both modes: for specific types of image, one might give better results than the other.

Which image sizes can I upscale?

AI Upscale takes images up to 1,000 x 1,000 px in fast mode and up to 512 x 512 px in slow mode, and returns them at 4× the resolution: a 300 x 400 image comes back at 1200 x 1600. The Image Editing API takes and outputs PNG, JPEG, WEBP and AVIF.

How do I upscale a whole catalog with the Photoroom API?

Run calls in parallel, one image per call, up to 60 images a minute by default. For higher limits on high-volume catalogs, talk to sales.

Can I use Photoroom from Claude?

Yes. Photoroom has an MCP server for AI assistants such as Claude, which includes the upscale API: see Photoroom MCP for more details.
