Positioning

Control exactly where the subject sits in the result - scaling, alignment, padding, and margins - so every image in a catalog comes out consistently framed.

Smart Cropping

Reframe images around the subject automatically - prompt it to focus on a specific element, or crop faces out for marketplace compliance.

Upscale

Turn small, low-res images into sharp ones at 4× the size - with a fast mode for volume and a slow mode for maximum quality.

Frequently asked questions

What is the relighting API?

Photoroom's relighting API fixes over- and under-exposed product photos automatically. You send a photo to the Photoroom API and get it back relit. With the color-preserving mode, hues and saturation match the original.

How much does the relighting API cost?

Relighting is included in the Plus API plan, at $100 a month ($0.10 an image), and in Enterprise plans with custom pricing: talk to sales. A call costs the same whatever edits it combines, so relighting, background removal and a shadow in one call count as one image. Details are on the pricing page.

How do I call the relighting API?

Get your API key, then send your image with lighting.mode set. This example relights a photo and keeps its background:

curl --request POST \
  --url https://image-api.photoroom.com/v2/edit \
  --header 'x-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY' \
  --form imageFile=@/path/to/your/image.jpg \
  --form referenceBox=originalImage \
  --form maxWidth=2000 \
  --form maxHeight=2000 \
  --form removeBackground=false \
  --form lighting.mode=ai.auto \
  --output with-re-lighting.png

Use ai.preserve-hue-and-saturation so colors match the original, or ai.optimize-portrait for photos of people. Every parameter is in the relighting docs.

Which formats and sizes are supported?

Send PNG, JPEG, WEBP or AVIF files up to 30 MB and up to 3,500 x 3,500 px. You get the same formats back. Full details are in the relighting docs.

Can I relight and remove the background in one call?

Yes. Photoroom's relighting API combines with background removal, shadows and resizing in one call, at the price of one image.

How do I batch relight a whole catalog with the Photoroom API?

Photoroom's relighting API handles batches by running calls in parallel, one image per call, up to 60 images a minute by default. For higher limits on high-volume catalogs, talk to sales.

Does relighting change the product?

Photoroom's relighting API corrects the lighting of the photo. When color accuracy matters, use the color-preserving mode, so hues and saturation match the original.

Can I use Photoroom from Claude?

Yes. With the Photoroom MCP server, Claude can relight a product photo when you ask it to, along with other Photoroom edits. See Photoroom MCP to set it up. To relight a whole catalog, use the API.

Is the relighting API secure?

For every Photoroom API customer, Photoroom is SOC 2 Type 2 certified and GDPR compliant, images sent through the API aren't used to train AI models, and API operational logs are deleted after 15 days.

What should I do if I need help with the API?
