When e‑commerce teams upload AI-edited listing photos with errors, it results in complaints from platform partners, dissatisfied marketplace sellers, and thousands of dollars lost in sales. That’s because low-quality, inaccurate visuals don’t sell, hence why enterprise teams are prioritizing quality when adopting AI product photography. 

Three in four enterprise leaders surveyed in our Photoroom B2B Enterprise Buyer Survey, conducted in March 2026, say that improving content quality and consistency is what starts their evaluation of new tools, ahead of cost, speed, and other factors.

However, the frontier AI models that enterprise teams are evaluating often fail at product accuracy, an important measure of AI image quality in e‑commerce. Across 850 products tested in the Photoroom Product Fidelity Benchmark, the best AI image models from Google, OpenAI, and Black Forest Labs only maintained product accuracy 29% of the time at most.

The fidelity gap is that difference between the AI product photography accuracy enterprise teams expect and the accuracy today's best models deliver, and it’s not an aesthetic problem but rather a system problem.

This report covers what the data show about why models fail, what fidelity failures cost e‑commerce businesses, and what it takes to close the fidelity gap from the first deployment of AI product photography solutions.

What’s the tension between AI adoption speed and product accuracy?

Enterprise teams are adopting AI product photography to improve content quality, but their single biggest concern is that AI will misrepresent the product itself. 

In the March 2026 Photoroom B2B Enterprise Buyer Survey of 322 enterprise leaders, 75% said improving content quality and consistency is what starts their search for new tools, the most common motivation by a wide margin. Their reasoning is practical. AI automation is the most resource-efficient way to scale image quality. It costs less than expanding production teams, moves faster than studio schedules, and removes the back-and-forth with external editing partners.

Layered on top of that quality motive is speed. Because rivals are adopting AI and categories are moving faster, 60% of leaders also in the same survey said AI and automation initiatives drive their evaluations. In their own words, taking too long to integrate AI solutions into their workflows feels like falling behind.

However, when asked their biggest concern in producing product images with AI, 37% of enterprise leaders in the Photoroom B2B Enterprise Buyer Survey cited the risk of inaccurate or misrepresented visuals, ahead of concerns like inconsistent quality across images and integration complexity. The thing they fear most about the technology they are racing to adopt is what it might do to the product itself.

Together, these findings describe the position of most enterprise teams today: Move too slowly and competitors set the standard for the category; move fast with the wrong tools and the catalog fills with images of products that do not exist as shown. Resolving that tension starts with knowing exactly how today's models fail, and how often.

How do the best AI models fail most product fidelity checks?

In the July 2026 Photoroom Product Fidelity Benchmark, the best AI image-editing models from Google, OpenAI, and Black Forest Labs passed product accuracy checks in only 25–29% of generations. 

The benchmark tested 850 products, spanning clothing, footwear, bags, jewelry, and accessories, through four leading AI image-editing models for virtual model generation and scored every one of the 3,400 outputs on a single question: is this still the same product?

Here’s what the process involved:

  • Each product ran through all four models at 2K resolution using the same prompt.

  • 10 trained annotators; every generation reviewed by at least three.

  • Custom side-by-side UI, independent pan/zoom, 30-second minimum review time.

  • One flag = fail. A generation passes as accurate only if no annotator flags an issue, because one shopper in the real world noticing a warped logo is enough to make a listing inaccurate.

After testing, the Photoroom research team found that top-tier models achieved low scores on product accuracy. The benchmark showed that the highest-scoring model, Nano Banana 2, passed product accuracy checks in only 29.0% of generations, followed by Nano Banana Pro at 28.2%, GPT Image 2 Medium at 27.2%, and FLUX.2 Klein 9B at 16.8%.

Across all four models tested in the Photoroom Product Fidelity Benchmark, the most common fidelity failures were logo and text distortion, missing elements, pattern or design changes, and color shifts.

These results are not distinct from how AI image-editing models work. Generative editing models synthesize a new output rather than editing the source image directly, and preserving exact product details is a documented open problem in research. This is why better prompting does not close the product fidelity gap, even for frontier models, but instead produces outputs with serious business implications.

What do AI model fidelity failures cost e‑commerce businesses?

AI product fidelity failures cost e‑commerce businesses through returns and disputes, eroded shopper trust, and demand that shifts to competitors with more accurate images.

One of our e‑commerce marketplace customers came to Photoroom in part because poorly edited seller images were putting return rates at risk alongside gross merchandise value (GMV) and sell-through rates (STR). After a six-week proof of concept, GMV and STR improved 2–5% across accessories, impressions and engagement rose 5–6% on processed listings, and return rates showed no negative impact. Consistent, accurate images kept return rates steady where inconsistent ones pushed them up.

That risk isn't specific to one marketplace. Shoppers rarely hesitate to raise disputes or return products that have different colors, textures, or structural components from their on-screen versions. When this happens, brands absorb the costs of processing returns, lower repeat purchase rates, legal exposure for product misrepresentation, and the operational task of replacing inaccurate images across every channel.

It’s easy to catch and correct a handful of flawed photos. But at enterprise scale, with catalogs running into tens of thousands of SKUs refreshed across seasons, channels, and markets, the same failure rate produces damage that outpaces any manual review. For example, a 3% defect rate across 400 SKUs produces a dozen flawed listings a team can manage; the same rate across 40,000 SKUs published through automated workflows results in 1,200 inaccurate listings, most of which reach shoppers before anyone on the team sees them. 

2. Shoppers lose trust and switch platforms

In our consumer survey for the State of GenAI in Marketplaces 2026 report, 63% of UK shoppers said inconsistent product images make a seller or marketplace seem unreliable, and 71% said the responsibility for getting images right belongs to the marketplace itself.

When an AI model presents a product image that is inconsistent with the product’s true nature, it signals unprofessionalism across all customer touchpoints, which impacts the perceived value of products. Perceived value improves consumer trust, and according to the Harvard Business Review, 80% of customers would rather buy from businesses they trust.

In the same Photoroom consumer survey, 51% of shoppers said they would switch to a marketplace offering clearer, more accurate product images. Image accuracy, in other words, decides where repeat purchases go.

3. Shoppers who switch become a competitor's growth

The switching shoppers from the consumer data have to go somewhere, and they go to whichever competitor shows products accurately, whether or not their image production process involves AI automation.

With 88% of organizations now using AI in at least one business function, according to McKinsey's State of AI survey, adopting AI separates no one. The real business advantage comes from getting AI integration right. Teams that ship accurate AI-edited images at catalog scale gain an advantage most of the market hasn’t yet organized itself to replicate, and the ones that do so understand that an AI generation model is one component, not the solution.

How to close close the fidelity gap in AI product photography

Closing the fidelity gap requires a system, not a model. The costs outlined above aren't the result of choosing one frontier AI image-editing model over the other. They come from treating a generative model's output as a finished product image instead of a raw input that still needs verification. Teams that close the fidelity gap build that verification into their production architecture before the first image ships.

2. Visual QA catches and corrects fidelity issues before images go live
