Depth of field

Depth of field is the range of distance within an image that appears acceptably sharp and in focus. A shallow depth of field keeps only part of the image sharply focused, while a deep depth of field keeps more of the scene in focus.

Depth of field is an important visual property in photography because it helps direct attention. In product and commercial imagery, selective focus can emphasize the subject while reducing background distractions.

Different image types use depth of field differently. Catalog and marketplace images often prioritize overall product clarity, while lifestyle and staged imagery may use blur more intentionally to create mood or draw attention.

Depth of field matters because focus affects how a product is read visually. The amount of background blur or sharpness can change whether an image feels clinical, contextual, premium, or distracting.

In the context of visual commerce, depth of field connects to product photography, lifestyle images, realism, and product staging because focus choices influence both usability and visual style.
