Agentic commerce is a model of digital commerce in which AI agents act on behalf of shoppers or businesses to discover, compare, select, and potentially purchase products. Instead of only providing information or recommendations, AI agents can take actions across different stages of the shopping journey based on a user's goals, preferences, and permissions.
Agentic commerce is not the same as conversational commerce or AI-assisted shopping. A chatbot or AI shopping assistant may answer questions, summarize reviews, or recommend products while leaving decisions and actions to the shopper. In agentic commerce, an AI agent can move beyond assistance to perform tasks, interact with commerce systems, and make or execute decisions on the user's behalf.
Agentic commerce relies on products and commerce systems being understandable and accessible to machines. AI agents need accurate information about products, including attributes, variants, prices, availability, shipping, policies, and other data needed to compare options and determine whether a product meets a shopper's requirements. Agentic commerce protocols can provide structured ways for AI agents to interact with merchants, platforms, product catalogs, payment providers, and other commerce systems.
For e‑commerce businesses, agentic commerce creates a new layer of product discovery alongside search engines, marketplaces, social platforms, and online stores. Products increasingly need to be represented in ways that both people and AI shopping systems can understand and trust. Structured product data provides machine-readable information, while accurate, consistent product images communicate visual attributes such as color, shape, materials, proportions, variants, and product context.
For sellers, agentic commerce introduces AI agents as a new intermediary between products and shoppers. Product visibility increasingly depends on whether AI systems can accurately interpret product data, understand product visuals, compare available options, and determine whether a product matches a shopper's intent.
Agentic commerce therefore connects product discovery, structured commerce data, product imagery, and transaction infrastructure within a shopping journey that may be partially or fully mediated by AI.
